My eighth grade maker class had gotten started building an 8 x 8 x 10′ tiny house when the pandemic sent everybody home in March 2020. Students didn’t come back to school until the following September, by which time the maintenance staff had reduced our framing to a pile of two by fours. Undeterred, the next group of eighth graders continued the project. It turned out to be ideal for hybrid learning. During the remote classes, students designed the house using SketchUp, a free online CAD program. During the in person classes we built the actual house. By year’s end we had a weatherproof tiny house complete with doors, windows, and asphalt roof, and an electrical system. It was a lot of fun.
