In an effort to encourage spontaneous musical improvisation, I built the Butter Jam Express with the help of some art students. It is a mobile musical platform that we installed in the JRJ Student Center. Funded by the Music, Art, and Maker departments, it was less annoying and more fun than widely predicted. Students, teachers and staff got together to jam when the mood struck.
The platform consists of a variety of used instruments obtained from Craigslist and eBay – a mic, two amps, a bass, a guitar, congas, and most of a Pearl Rhythm Traveller compact drum set. The platform is 3/4″ plywood with a 2×4 frame riding on 10″ pneumatic caster wheels. Total cost was under $1000. It’s also seen use in a theater production and an outdoor event, so far.
